My name is Jason Stuempges. I am a photographer that specializes in landscape photography. Landscape photography is more than just taking a photo of a pretty scene. It's about getting outside, spending time in nature, and appreciating its, often times, subtle beauty. Landscape photography has motivated me to explore more, whether that means exploring other parts of the country, or just exploring the landscape back home. Unlike most forms of photography, landscape photography requires patience. I don't always come away with portfolio image when I head out.
Weather, and especially light, play a big factor. You can plan all you want, but if the light isn't right, the image won't be as impactful. This is why I revisit the same location multiple times. Not only does this increase my chance of getting great conditions, but it also makes me more familiar with the location. I begin to notice the smaller details of the landscape that I may not notice if it was my first time there.
Landscape photography is my passion in life and I feel fortunate to be able to do this for a living. My hope is that my passion translates to the photos I am taking. I have been mainly photographing landscapes since 2016. Since that time, I have had a greater appreciation for the outdoors. I am constantly reminded that the world is bigger than us, so we must all find little ways to keep it intact. I am a firm believer in leave no trace. Nature isn't just meant for a few to enjoy.
Most of my work features La Crosse, Wisconsin and the surrounding area, as this is the area I call home. I also do a bit of traveling with my partner Hannah in our 2022 Minnie Winnie camper. Together, we have traveled through many parts of the country including, the north shore of Minnesota, Door County, parts of the southwest, and a handful of National Parks and Monuments. Our goal is to explore as much as we can.
